Did Summer I Turned Pretty Use Taylor Swift to Confirm Who Belly Chooses? (2025)

The Summer I Turned Pretty will not pass up an opportunity for a Taylor Swift needle drop — but did the season 3 teaser just use music to subtly confirm the love triangle outcome? Us thinks so.

Prime Video shared a sneak peek on Thursday, April 24, which showed snippets of Belly (Lola Tung) and Jeremiah’s (Gavin Casalegno) college romance. Swift’s “Daylight” played in the background as Belly and Jeremiah enjoyed their honeymoon phase — but then the clip transitioned to Belly seeing Conrad (Christopher Briney) for the first time in years.

As if that wasn’t enough, the music changed to “Red (Taylor’s Version)” with the lyrics, “I once believed love would be burning red.” The switch spoke volumes for fans looking for clues as to who Belly will choose in the show’s third and final season.

It also feels important to note that several scenes from the teaser are pulled directly from Jenny Han‘s book series, which inspired the hit show.

The Summer I Turned Pretty, which premiered in 2022, centers on Belly and her brother, Steven (Sean Kaufman), who spend the summer visiting a beach house belonging to their childhood friends, Conrad and Jeremiah. After initially having a crush on Conrad, Belly’s life gets more complicated when she finds herself developing feelings for Jeremiah.

When season 2 wrapped up in 2023, things were right on track with Belly choosing a future with Jeremiah after Conrad seemed to let her go. But book fans are very well aware that Conrad’s point of view will come into play in the third season. Through flashbacks, Conrad will reveal why he let Belly go — and how a reconnection ultimately leads to her final choice in the love triangle.

While Han’s book series ended with Belly and Conrad together, the creative team behind The Summer I Turned Pretty has remained tight-lipped about whether the show will closely follow the events of the book series. Casalegno, 25, however, previously showed his support for a different outcome of the central love triangle.

“I do feel like there’s a strong chance that that’s a possibility,” he exclusively told Us Weekly in June 2023 about the show potentially straying from the original events in the books. “Obviously, I know where [my character Jeremiah] ends up going and what ends up happening. But I don’t emphasize on that. Because I think Jenny writes it so well that I’m able to kind of get there naturally without having to force it in a certain direction.”

Han, meanwhile, teased that changes were coming, telling Entertainment Weekly in March, “There are going to be surprises. There are the things that [book fans] know and then there are things they think they know, and then there’s going to be, hopefully, things that surprise them.”

In a separate interview, Tung, 22, showed support for onscreen shakeups.

“The one thing I’ve always admired about Jenny is that every season and every decision about what’s coming next is purely to serve the story,” she explained. “She’s never going to do anything that doesn’t make sense for the story.”

Tung continued: “It’s all about this beautiful world she’s created and giving the fans something really, really special and giving us something really special to work with.”
